About Adobe Acrobat PDF Files

To view PDF files you must install the Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free of charge from Adobe's website and other locations on the Internet.

1. Configuring Internet Explorer for Windows to display PDF files

Internet Explorer displays PDF files in the browser window automatically if the Acrobat plug-in files are installed. The plug-in files install automatically with Acrobat viewers.

If you select a PDF file and Internet Explorer prompts you to save the file to disk or open it outside the browser window, or does not respond, try one or more of the following:

  • If you're using an Acrobat 4.0x viewer, make sure that a Pdf.ocx file and a Pdf.tlb file is in the Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 4.0\Acrobat\ActiveX folder or the Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 4.0\Reader\ActiveX folder
  • If you're using an Acrobat 3.0x viewer, make sure that a Pdf*.ocx file and a Pdf.tlb file are in the Acrobat3\ActiveX folder or the Reader\ActiveX folder
  • Reinstall Acrobat viewer to make sure that the correct plug-in information is added to the Windows registry
  • Restart Windows to make sure that Internet Explorer is accessing the most current Windows registry information.

2. Configuring Netscape Navigator for Windows to display PDF files

Navigator 3.x - when you install the Acrobat 4.0 or later viewer, the installer automatically copies the Navigator plug-in file into the Netscape\Navigator\Programs\Plugins folder.

Navigator 4.x - you may need to manually move the Nppdf32.dll file or the Nppdf16.dll file from the Acrobat4.0\Reader\Browser or Acrobat4.0\Acrobat\Browser folder into the Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins folder.

If the plug-in is installed and you select a PDF file, Navigator will open your Acrobat viewer to display the file within the browser window. If it doesn't, you may have to set file associations:

  • Start Netscape and select Edit -> Preferences
  • Select Applications
  • Scroll through the list of applications until you see Acrobat or Portable Document Format, then double-click on it. If you can't find it in the list, select "New"
  • Make sure the options are set as follows:
  • Description: Portable Document Format
  • MIME Type: application/PDF
  • Suffixes: pdf
  • Handled by: If you have installed the Acrobat Plug-in for your browser select the PDFViewer plug-in, otherwise select the Acrobat Reader application (click the choose/browse button to locate this on your hard disk).
  • Click OK to finish
